Schwarz Expander on a typodont

Appliance Profile What is the Purpose of the Schwarz Expander?

For many patients, a narrow arch is a common orthodontic problem and, if left untreated, can lead to severe crowding. The Schwarz Expander Appliance is removable or non-removable and used to expand lower dental arch by stimulating bone growth in width. It can be used to accomplish various treatment goals but is often used as the first appliance in an overall comprehensive plan of orthodontic treatment, referred to as Phase I, when the patient is young, and the dental arch is still developing to make room for all the future permanent teeth.

Frequent Questions Learn More About the Expander

A Schwarz appliance is an expander used to gradually widen a narrow dental arch, most often the lower arch, to make room for crowded teeth. It has a small expansion screw in the center that's turned on a set schedule.

Gaining space this way can help permanent teeth come in straighter and may reduce the need for removing teeth later.

A parent turns the center screw with a small key, following the schedule we provide, often at bedtime. We check progress at regular visits until enough space has been gained.

Speech may sound different for the first few days. Reading out loud and practicing "s" sounds helps most children adjust quickly.

After the active widening, it's usually kept in place for several more months to hold the new width while the teeth and bone settle. Total time is often under a year, depending on your child's needs.

Stick to softer foods for the first few days and avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods like gum, caramels, popcorn and ice. Brush the appliance and teeth carefully after meals.
