Invisalign has a new Palatal Expander System, and in 2024 our office was selected as the first in Michigan to provide this treatment for patients. The expansion process involves using a series of removable custom 3D-printed expanders that gradually widen the palate to both correct crossbites and create space for adult permanent teeth. This gives children who can benefit from expansion the option of not having to manually turn the appliance every day. The Invisalign Expander is clinically proven to be safe and effective, with no metal parts required.
The Invisalign Palatal Expander is a removable, metal-free way to widen a child's narrow upper jaw. Instead of one fixed metal appliance with a screw, it uses a series of custom clear expanders, each slightly wider than the last, to gently guide the upper jaw outward.

Widening the upper jaw can correct a crossbite and make room for permanent teeth to come in.
It's designed for growing children, generally around ages 7 to 10, while the upper jaw is still developing and easier to widen. We'll check whether your child is a good candidate at their evaluation.
Children usually move to a new expander about once a day, following the schedule we provide, until the planned expansion is reached. Afterward, a holding expander keeps the new width stable while the bone settles.
The removable design is easier to clean and more comfortable, but it only works if it's worn as directed, nearly all day. If you're concerned your child might forget it, lose it at lunch or skip changes, a traditional fixed expander may be a better fit. You know your child best, and we'll help you decide.
Yes. The expander comes out at meals, so there are no special food rules. Have your child brush, rinse the expander and put it right back in after eating.
Rinse it whenever it comes out and gently brush both sides with a soft toothbrush and cool water. Keep it in its case when it's out of the mouth.
